Ganeshgule Temple

Ganeshgule is a village whose history is fascinating. Located in Ratnagiri district, 22 km away from Ratnagiri and 4 kilometres from the road that extends from Purnagad while coming from Pawas, this quaint village is mostly a temple town that is known for its Ganesh Temple. The temple is said to date back to 400 years and is presumed to be built in the pre-Chatrapati Shivaji era.

Built with laterite rocks, the temple’s architecture is presumed to be from the pre-Chatrapati Shivaji era as the dome of the temple is of a completely different style. There is no prevalent idol of Lord Ganesha in this temple, instead a self-stylised rock is worshipped as Lord Ganesha. It is called Swayambhu.

An intriguing folklore is associated with the idol. It is said that in ancient times, the Lord’s naval would be a source of a stream in the form of tirtha, the holy water and it was called Gomukh. But one day, suddenly, the water stopped flowing. It could have been due to some natural causes, but the devotees believe that Lord Ganesha moved from Ganeshgule and settled in Ganpatipule. The temple area is flanked by lush greenery and the ambiance is very calming. People from all over come here to seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings.

What’s more fascinating is, there is a man-made wonder that is worth seeing.  A 70 feet deep well with steps has been carved in the stones on the lateritic plateau near the temple. Who built this well on this barren plateau? How did they know about the water source?  What were the problems encountered while digging the well?  All these questions are unanswered. But the well is worth seeing and this man-made wonder blows your mind.

About 1.5 km away from the temple is the wondrous Ganeshgule Beach. White sands, emerald sea and the whole 1.5 km stretch has mountains on both sides. The terrain is rocky. The beach is popular amongst locals but still secluded. It is a great spot for some reflective thinking, and you will be in awe of the picturesque surroundings. The green sea with mountains as the backdrop makes for a postcard perfect setting.

When making a Ratnagiri itinerary, do add Ganeshgule to the list. You simply have to watch an enrapturing sunset at this beach and it will surely imprint in your fond memories-list! And of course, visit the peaceful Ganesh Temple and delve a little deeper in the town’s history.
