Konkan Railway

The Konkan Railway (KR) is a 760 km long rail that passes through one of the most difficult terrains in the world making its construction a marvel of engineering. The Indian engineers completed this project within just eight years which is a global record, a unique feat of civil engineering. The financing model created for KR is still unmatched. The Konkan region was given an economic fillip with the construction of this line.

Set in a huge 3.5 acre campus, Pracheen Konkan is life size open air museum depicting the lifestyle of Konkan 500 years back. Guided tour in the the museum takes you through various aspects of life in Konkan like social, economic, cultural and religious background.

Everyday the staff lead free guided tours throughout the campus making aware about the history, people, nature and lifestyle of the Konkan in most unique way.

Ratnagiri Marine Museum

Established in 1985 by the Marine Biological Research Station with the objective of educating the public and promoting conservation of marine biodiversity, this museum showcases marine life of the Arabian Sea. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits that range from preserved marine specimens to live creatures in aquariums. One of the highlights include the skeleton of a whale which draws significant attention. Additionally, the museum holds several specimens of rare and exotic fish, corals, and mollusks. Interactive and informative displays provide insights into marine ecology, biology, and fisheries. Shivsrushti Dervan

Shivsrushti or Shiv-Samarth Mandir located at Dervan is one of the must-see locations in Chiplun. The entire life history of Maratha warrior Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is etched through amazing sculptures and lifesized statues with in detail expressions of characters including animals.

The whole museum is formed as if a fort which brings the glory of Chatrapati Shivaji-era. In the temple premises, along with Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sant Ramdas, Sant Tukaram and Sant Namdev are seen standing in their life-size forms. Numerous memorable scenes from Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life history are etched on the walls.

An artist of Mumbai named Ganesh Patkar has developed these statues with his workmates. Construction of the memorial looks like a fort. Near about one crore rupees and 15 years were spent in construction of Shivsrushti.

Moti Talav

This beautiful lake constructed in front of the Sawantwadi Palace is a haven for nature lovers. Moti means pearl. Enchanting landscape is formed by the pleasing green hills all around this pearl of the Sawantwadi town. One can enjoy a delightful moment here after sunset. As the sun sets, streetlights are switched on at once around the complete periphery of the lake.

Surrounded by emerald hills and a belt of mango and palm trees, the Moti Talav looks nothing less than a lone pearl amidst a bunch of rocks. It is built in front of The Royal Palace and tourists can’t miss this beautiful lake situated at the centre of the township. It is a popular spot for tourists to enjoy boat rides and the jogging track. Encircling the lake is a well-manicured garden blooming with lovely flowers, tiny fountains, and life-size statues. Tourists can take a round of the lake in peddle boats or sit around it and gaze at the beautiful view.

Dhamapur Talav

Dhamapur Lake, nestled snugly amidst lush forests of Sindhudurg district is a glowing example of how an intelligent and sustainable local system can support communities and wildlife. What makes it more special is that it is a freshwater reservoir formed by perhaps one of the oldest earthen dams in Maharashtra. Dhamapur village’s strong historical links have been proven that it has been here since at least the Shilahara period (c. 10th – 11th century CE)
