Vimleshwar Cave Temple

Situated at a distance of 10 kms from Devgad, in Wada, there is a very beautiful & ancient Shree Vimleswar Temple. Carved into a monolithic laterite rock, this temple of Lord Shiva is a fine model of ancient sculpture. It is believed that Shree Vimleshwar Temple was found under the ground 2000 to 3000 years ago. It is also believed that this temple was built during the Pandav Era in one single night.

About Vimleshwar Cave Temple

Shree Vimleshwar Temple of Lord Shiva is nestled amidst coconut and betel nut plantations at Wada, around 10kms from Devgad. This temple is built in monolithic laterite rock. There are Deepstambhs in front of the temple. Elephants are carved on both sides in front of the temple. On top of the temple there are sculptures with symbols of the Panchmahabhutas. We See Nandi after entering the temple. After going up the stairs, there is Swayambhu Shivling.

 

There are tall bushes around the temple. On the left side of the main path, as we descend towards the temple, there are beautiful serene sculptures carved in black stone. There is a small temple of Kalbhairav in a small cave in the beginning of the temple premises. Next to this temple is a temple of Ganesha. The main temple of Vimaleshwar is visible after coming in front of the Ganesh temple.

 

As per local belief this temple at Wada is built in Pandav era. Many herstones are placed near this cave temple. In the 12ft deep sanctum, there is a holy phallic image of Vimleshwar Shivalingam. Vimleshwar Cave temple is considered a unique archaeological monument. Special attraction of the temple is the continuous water flowing from the rock near the cave throughout the year sources of which is not yet found.

 

It is believed that Shree Vimleshwar Temple was found under the ground 2000 to 3000 years ago. Shree Vimleshwar Temple is one of the oldest temples in Konkan. The Vimleshwar temple with its picturesque surroundings and exquisite specimens of sculpture is forever etched in the minds of devotees who come for darshan.
