Shimga (Holi) is one of the popular festivals in Maharashtra, especially in konkan. It is celebrated on full moon day of Marathi Month of Phalgun which usually comes in the month of March. Dancing with Palkhi is a ritual at the time of Shimga (holi) festival. In some places in Konkan the celebration begins with Holi Pournima and lasts for 9 days.The villagers here celebrate Holi with God in a Palkhi and bring it to everyone’s house so that they together can pray for the wellbeing of the families. People decorate their houses with paintings and also make various floral designs on the entrance of their homes. Here people celebrate this festival in such a fervor and belief that GOD arrives at our own house
Holi or Shimgotsav (Shimga) is celebrated on a large scale in Konkan. Shimagotsav, which comes at the end of the winter season and the beginning of summer is celebrated traditionally and with a lot of enthusiasm in the Konkan region. The main purpose of the Holi celebrations is to destroy the evils of the society by burning them in the bonfire.
The Holi festival is celebrated in a unique way in Konkan. Shimagotsav is celebrated approximately for eight days all over. On this occasion, Palkhi (A procession) is carried out of local deities from the local temples. You must see the celebration where these Palkhis are made to dance. All the villagers from the surrounding villages come together and celebrate this festival with great zeal and devotion.
On the day of Holi, thousands of villagers bring a big palm tree on the Holi ground by swinging it high in the air. After that, a big pit is dug in the ground and the tree is buried in it and the Holi is lit. A variety of sweets are offered in the Holi as a tradition.
During the eight days of Shimagotsav, the atmosphere in Konkan is fun filled and enchanting. It is as if everyone has the freedom to be naughty and mischievous. Therefore, all the villagers loudly call out each other with funny names and enjoy the Holi festival immensely.
