Kasainath Parvat & Temple

Not too far away from the border of Goa-Maharashtra, lies a verdant hill called Kasaintah -- a trekkers' delight -- that allows one to soak in some of the most panoramic views of the countryside below. The mountain is about 700mts and the climb up is pretty steep. It takes about 90 minutes climbing up with 4 tiny breaks.

About Kasainath Parvat & Temple

Kasainath is a temple dedicated to Shiva 41kms away from Panjim beyond the Goa border in Dodamarg Maharashtra. The temple lies on hill and can only be reached by about 1 hr trek with moderate uphill terrain. The actual trek starts after walking through scenery view of paddy fields on both sides and a devi idol at the foot hill. Before you reach the actual site you'll find a Shiva Lingam and a Nandi in its ruins. The mountain is said to be from the era of Ramayana, during the final stage of the battle in Ramayana when Laxman gets hit with an arrow and falls unconscious. It is said that a part of the mountain fell off while Lord Hanuman was bringing the mount 'Dronagiri' from Himalayas when he was in the pursuit of 'Sanjeevani Booti' to revive Laxman. The part of the mountain that fell off is said to be what is known as the 'Kasainath Parvat' today.

The 2nd story behind this mountain goes something like this… Back in the 9th century when the Pandavas were sent to exile for 13 years they rested here for a few days. During their stay, all the Pandavas being ardent worshipers of Lord Shiva, installed a Shiva Lingam there which they worshipped. Since then, many devotees climb the small mountain to gain blessings. This temple attracts thousands of pilgrims during the holy month of Shravan and on Mahashivaratri. This breathtaking place came to be known as ‘Kasainath Parvath‘, a resting place of Lord Shiva.

Kasainath is a conical-shaped hill visible from afar. Although the walking distance is short, the slippery climb makes it difficult to walk hence proper walking or climbing shoes will be of good help. Trekkers are also requested to carry lots of drinking water. The hill can tire out those who lack some measure of fitness. Unlike full-day treks, this one can be completed in just half a day.

Over the years, Dodmarg has become nature lovers' delight because of its rich biodiversity.
